Work to improve the Mobile Regional Airport continues with major projects including: repaving of all parking lots, installation of new ceiling tiles, a sprinkler system and lighting, attractive new furniture and construction of an exit stairwell. The Mobile Airport Authority strives to keep airport patrons aware of improvements taking place at our facility. Please bear with us as we continue to improve our facilities for you.
Progress Continues on Airport Parking Lot Repaving Project Work to repave the short-term, long-term and car rental lots at Mobile Regional Airport continues. To date, the east and west sections of the short-term parking lot and the west section of the long-term parking lot have been repaved. Over the summer months, the Authority will select a contractor to finish repaving the remaining sections of the long-term and car rental lots. The contractor, when chosen, will also be responsible for erecting new signage, new gates, and new ticketing equipment, including a credit card ticketing machine. In order to minimize the impact to our passengers the Authority will cordon off only small sections of the airport parking lot to be repaved at a time. New Furniture Makes Visiting the Airport a Little More Comfortable The Mobile Airport Authority recently finished installing new furniture in the baggage claim, airline ticketing and second floor mezzanine areas. Take a seat and enjoy your time at Mobile Regional Airport! Lighting, Ceiling Tile, and Sprinkler System Project Almost Complete The Mobile Airport Authority continues to move forward with the lighting, ceiling tile, and fire suppression system upgrades at Mobile Regional Airport. The Authority has completed Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III with new lighting, ceiling tiles, and a fire suppression system already installed in the police hallway, the police department, ticketing and baggage claim, the concourse and gate areas. Phase IV, the last phase of this project, will include the second floor areas near the security screening checkpoint and the high ceilings over the main lobby. Work on these areas has commenced and should be complete by June. The Authority is in day 238 of this 260 day project. This venture will improve the safety of our patrons inside the airport, all while improving the aesthetics. The new ceiling tiles and lighting will be vivid white and will increase visibility with less wattage. The lighting systems will also have photo sensors that automatically adjust lighting to changes in the airport’s natural light. This upgraded lighting system is earth-friendly and the first of many steps the Authority is taking to decrease the airport’s carbon footprint. Project schedules may vary based on the needs of our passengers and tenants. Stairwell Relocated and Demolition to Begin On August 18, 2008 construction of a new exit stairwell, near the passenger gate area, began. Since that time the new exit has been unveiled and the old exit stairwell, across from Hudson News, Carpe Diem Coffee and Tea, and the Cruise City Bar and Grill, is currently being demolished. The removal of this exit will allow passengers to see their gate while walking down the concourse or resting in the concession seating areas. To date, this project is 60% complete. Many of the abovementioned projects are funded, all or in-part, by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants. The Mobile Regional Airport is committed to providing notice of construction activities through updates on our website, www.mobairport.com, street signage, and through our customer service center.
