“The few. The proud. The well paid.”

In May 2005, the Mobile Airport Authority created the Wingnuts Program in an effort to increase awareness about aviation-related educational and employment opportunities in the Mobile area. The Mobile Airport Authority chose the name Wingnut to describe “a student who wishes to become part of an elite category of aircraft maintenance technicians in the greatest demand. Employers recognize Wingnuts as those who represent the highest standards of training and commitment to the job.”

“Wingnuts” learn aviation related skills by attending the Aviation College of Mobile, AIDT, Baldwin County Schools or Mobile County Schools. These schools directly prepare them for jobs with local aerospace companies such as Mobile Aerospace Engineering, L3 Communications or Star Aviation.

There are also 15 community Wingnut partners: Mobile Aerospace Engineers, AIDT, Goodrich, L3 Communications, AirInc, Star Aviation, Mobile Area Chamber, Aviation College of Mobile, Baldwin County School System, Mobile County School System and Mobile Works. The Partners meet four times a year to discuss how to better recruit, educate and match students with educational opportunities and employees with employers.

The Wingnut Program has paired a number of students with the proper education to lead them to high skill/high paying aerospace jobs. In ten years, David Yarbrough, the Program Facilitator, hopes to help expand Aviation College enrollment to 600 students and provide Mobile employers with highly trained employees.
