During the 2006 Berlin Air Show, representatives from the Mobile Airport Authority and the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce met with representatives from Hamburg’s business community. Based on that visit and the remarkable similarities between the Central Gulf Coast region and Hamburg, the idea of a leadership trip to Hamburg emerged. Hamburg’s business community enthusiastically agreed to host such a group in January 2007. Community leaders from Baldwin County, Mobile County and Jackson County, Mississippi participated jointly as the Central Gulf Coast Aerospace Alliance.
Hamburg is surprisingly similar to the Central Gulf Coast boasting an impressive downtown redevelopment plan and an extraordinary logistics infrastructure centered on its deep-water port. Like our region, aerospace, tourism, and international trade are dominant components of Hamburg’s economy. As one of the 16 federal states of Germany, Hamburg works closely with the neighboring regions of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Hamburg’s regional team called, Hamburg – the place for aviation, is supporting and building their aerospace industry around Airbus Deutschland and Lufthansa Technik with an aggressive, multi-faceted and sophisticated strategy. Through this visit, the Central Gulf Coast delegation began a mutually beneficial relationship built on the extraordinary similarities between Hamburg and the Central Gulf Coast. The University of South Alabama, College of Engineering, expects to develop a student exchange program with the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg. The Central Gulf Coast delegation also met potential aerospace suppliers who might expand to the Central Gulf Coast should major aerospace projects in the area reach fruition. The Central Gulf Coast Aerospace Alliance expects to host a trip for our Hamburg colleagues this fall. With continued success and expansion, in 10 years, the Central Gulf Coast’s economy could look much like Hamburg’s today.
