Passengers, please confirm arrival and departure times with your airline as weather may delay some flights.

Due to the recent below-freezing temperatures, airlines may be required to de-ice aircraft before morning departures. This is especially true for early morning flights as these aircraft remain parked at the airport overnight and are thus more likely to accumulate frost.

GAT provides de-icing services for all Mobile Regional Airport airlines. However, when temperatures dip below 23 degrees the de-icing concentration, typically used in communities with Mobile’s average temperature, is no longer as effective. The de-icing mix is formulated based on an areas average temperature – Mobile’s average low temperature is 39 degrees. If Mobile’s average temperature were typically below 23 degrees, the de-icing concentration needed would be different and kept on-hand. However, Mobile has not experienced temperatures and frost conditions, like those expected this week, for many years. Delta Air Lines has ordered de-icing fluid that will work at lower temperatures; however, the additional supplies have not yet arrived to Mobile Regional Airport.

Morning flights on January 5 were delayed for approximately three hours due to the de-icing of aircraft. It is uncertain whether frost will accumulate on aircraft tonight and de-icing will be necessary on Wednesday, January 6. Please stay in close contact with your airline for the most recent information.

Some airlines have taken steps to avoid potential long delays. US Airways has decided to fly their aircraft back to Charlotte tonight, instead of keeping it on the ground at Mobile Regional Airport. This aircraft will return to Mobile in the early morning for the first departure, thus making long delays unlikely. Other airlines have not confirmed whether they will do the same.

The Mobile Airport Authority will keep passengers informed with additional information through the website, mobairport.com, and the Airport’s Facebook and Twitter pages. However, for the most accurate and timely information please contact your airline.
