Holiday Travel Tips From Your Hometown Airport!

The number of passengers flying U.S airlines over the Thanksgiving holidays is predicted to fall 4% compared to last year, according to the Air Transport Association of America. The busiest travel days are expected to be Monday, November 30; Sunday, November 29; Friday, November 20; and Wednesday, November 25. Even with fewer passengers, planes are expected to be nearly 90 percent full.

A little planning can save your vacation and holiday spirit - Mobile Regional Airport is here to help! As a first step, please visit the Airport's website at mobairport.com to find fare deals, compare fares and to check current flight arrivals and departures.

Also consider these packing and preparation tips:

Packing:
1. Pack Carefully. Pack valuables, money, laptops, medications, required medical equipment and fragile items in your carry-on bag. Pack all items that might be unsafe, e.g., knives, razors, swords, scissors, golf clubs, in checked bags.
2. Mail Gifts. Ship rather than carry-on gifts when possible. Airline aircraft can only hold so much weight so often excess packages and luggage does not make it to the final destination on time. Most aircraft have a capacity of 50 passengers and 70-75 bags.
3. Packing Gifts. Leave gifts unwrapped. TSA may open wrapped gifts to inspect them.
4. Overstuffed Luggage. Do not overstuff your bags. Overstuffed bags make searches more difficult for screeners
5. Locking Luggage. TSA suggests that you lock your checked baggage with a TSA “accepted and recognized” lock. TSA can gain access to bags with these locks without damaging or cutting your lock.
6. Sporting Equipment. Transport skis and ski poles in checked baggage. Sporting equipment that can be used as a club must be checked.
7. Packing Firearms. Unloaded firearms may be packed in hard-sided cases and checked but must be declared to your airline. The Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) web site www.tsa.gov has a complete list of prohibited items.

Before you leave for the Airport:
1. Check Flight Status. Check your flight’s status before you leave home. Visit www.mobairport.com, your airline’s website or call your airline’s 1-800 number.
2. Re-check TSA Guidelines. TSA guidelines may change between when you booked your flight and when you depart. Visit www.tsa.gov.
3. Get to the airport early. Allow plenty of time for traffic congestion, unloading and parking.
4. Anticipate Delays. Charge your cell phone and DVD player and bring extra batteries, books, toys and snacks.
5. Checkpoint Wait Times. TSA’s website lists average and maximum security checkpoint wait times by day of the week and time of day for many airports, including Mobile Regional Airport. At Mobile Regional, average wait time can vary from 3 minutes to 30 minutes.

When at the Airport: Allow extra time. Allow plenty of time for airline checking-in, passing through security and walking to the gate. Each airline has recommended lead times for domestic and international flights. For more information visit your airline’s website.

Screening Procedures:
1. Have available a boarding pass and government-issued photo identification available for each adult traveler. Children under sixteen are not required to provide identification.
2. As you approach the TSA screening area please place metallic items (keys, coins, phones, etc.) in your carry-on or in a plastic bin for easy pick up.
3. Remove your overcoat, jacket, blazer and suit coat, and place them all in the plastic bin. Sweaters and sweatshirts may remain on as long as they do not have metal or a suspicious amount of bulk.
4. Take your laptop and video cassette-type camera out of their carrying cases. Place them in the plastic bin.
5. Remove your shoes and place them on the conveyor belt. Shoes with metal, thick soles or even athletic shoes may require you to go through additional screening if not placed in the plastic bin.
6. For individuals who must carry liquids, gels and aerosols through the security checkpoint:
a. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a 3 ounce or smaller container.
b. These containers must be placed in a 1 quart, clear, plastic, zip-top bag.
c. 1 bag per passenger placed in a plastic bin for screening.
7. Please be aware that you may be required to go through further screening even if you do not set off metal detectors. If you are selected for further screening you may request a private area.
