Improvement Projects Continue at Mobile Regional Airport
Work to improve the Mobile Regional Airport continues. The Mobile Airport Authority strives to keep airport patrons aware of improvements taking place at our facility. Please bear with us as we continue to improve our facilities for you.
Construction Commences on Airport Parking Lots
In an effort to better accommodate our passengers, the Mobile Airport Authority is moving forward with plans to improve parking at the Mobile Regional Airport. All public parking lots, including short-term, long-term and car rental lots, will be refurbished and open for use by year’s end. Parking lots will also have fresh signage and new ticketing equipment, including a credit card ticketing machine.
The Mobile Airport Authority will commence work on Monday, January 26, 2009 by preparing the front-west section of the short and long-term parking lots for repaving. Barricades and signage will re-route passengers from the front-west section, specifically the 200 parking spaces that comprise lanes 1W - 6W. Lanes 1W - 6W will be under construction, and therefore inaccessible for parking, for approximately three months.
In order to minimize the impact to our passengers the Authority will cordon off only small sections of the airport parking lot at one time. For example, only after pavement and striping has been completed in lanes 1W – 6W wi11 the Authority begin work on another small section of the parking lot.
Lighting, Ceiling Tile, and Sprinkler System Project Moving Smoothly
The Mobile Airport Authority continues moving forward with the lighting, ceiling tile, and fire suppression system upgrade at Mobile Regional Airport.
The Authority has completed Phase I with new lighting, ceiling tiles, and a fire suppression system already installed in areas currently not utilized by passengers. Areas include the police hallway and the police department.
Phase II began January 12 and includes upgrades to the airline ticketing and baggage claim areas. To date, all aged ceiling tiles have been removed in these areas and contractors are installing the new fire suppression system, gridding system and lights.
Phase III will begin in mid-March and includes work on the concourse and gate areas. Phase IV, the last phase of this project, will include the second floor areas near the security screening checkpoint and the high ceilings over the main lobby. The Authority is in day 142 of this 260 day project.
This venture will improve the safety of our patrons inside the airport, all while improving the aesthetics. The new ceiling tiles and lighting will be vivid white and will increase visibility with less wattage. The lighting systems will also have photo sensors that automatically adjust lighting to changes in the airport’s natural light. This upgraded lighting system is earth-friendly and the first of many steps the Authority is taking to decrease the airport’s carbon footprint.
Project schedules may vary based on the needs of our passengers and tenants.
Progress Made on Stairwell Relocation Project
On August 18, 2008 construction of a new exit stairwell, near the passenger gate area, began. Temporary walls were erected around the construction site, which will keep the walkways clear of construction debris and reduce interference with passenger flow. The final step in this process will be the removal of an existing exit stairwell across from Hudson News, Carpe Diem Coffee and Tea, and the Cruise City Car and Grill. The removal of this exit will allow passengers to see their gate while walking down the concourse or resting in the concession seating areas. To date, the project is 30% complete.
Taxiway Alpha and Lima Rehab Update
The Taxiway Alpha and Lima paving project is now complete. Taxiway Alpha now employs new energy efficient (light emitting diode) LED lighting. Painting of all runways and taxiways will begin January 26, 2009. Painting projects should not directly impact passengers.
The Mobile Regional Airport is committed to providing notice of construction activities through updates on our website, www.mobairport.com, street signage, and through our customer service center. For more information, sign-up to receive our Aero Newsletter by emailing julie@mobairport.com.
